�鶹ӰԺ Commemorates the Observance of Juneteenth

Giving Meaning . . . to those who we work and live with, serve, and respect:

The Meaning of Juneteenth – Juneteenth is one of America’s oldest unofficial holidays and is observed each year on June 19th to mark the official end of slavery in the United States. The day, which gets its name from combining June and 19, has long been celebrated by black Americans to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people — but the story behind the holiday, and how Juneteenth got its meaning, started 156 years ago in Galveston, Texas.

The History Behind Juneteenth – On June 19, 1865, Union troops led by General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to break the news to the last remaining Confederate sympathizers that they had lost the Civil War and all enslaved must be freed.

“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free,” the Union general read aloud to the residents of Galveston, . “This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”

Newly freed slaves celebrated emancipation with “prayer, feasting, song, and dance” and the following year, the first official Juneteenth celebration was born, .

Look Back, Look Around, Look Within, and Move Forward – Juneteenth is a time to commemorate, celebrate, educate, and reflect on the Black experience in America. By looking back, looking around, and looking within, we are challenged to evaluate the foundations of inequality and move forward together, committing ourselves to the unfinished work of eradicating systemic racism.

�鶹ӰԺ is excited to march forward – literally and figuratively – in both the on-ground and virtual spaces. Let’s hope that the warmer weather brings to all great opportunities for a successful educational experience. While the pandemic is certainly not over, we remain positive that as the infection rates decrease and vaccine supplies increase, sunny days await us all. Remember to stay vigilant and continue to practice social distancing, mask wearing, hand sanitizing and to be respectful to all in our community.

Here are five ways to make a fresh start this Spring 2021:

Cheer on your favorite player and let them hear from you in the live chat! Nothing is more inspiring than having an active fan base and enthusiastic followers. During these past winter months, �鶹ӰԺ has been busy coordinating Zoom Information Sessions, Virtual Open Houses, college fairs, in-person and virtual learning experiences. These events are open to all and a great way for potential students to learn more about academic programs, Sound Athletics, residence and student life. Celebrating the accomplishments of our former students and alumni during February-Black History Month—is always a time that �鶹ӰԺ feels especially proud. This year 2021 is no different!

Since the late 1970s, February has been known as Black History Month, an annual celebration and time to recognize individuals, and the importance of black history in the United States. During this time, we honor accomplished people who are role models–from artists and civil rights activists to musicians and writers.

Here, at �鶹ӰԺ, the campus has grown into a community of creatives that has celebrated how representative students and alumni have evolved in the business, music and entertainment industries. We hope to share their successes this month!

We will highlight the achievements and positive contributions of former students and alumni each week during our Black History Month Celebration. Please follow us on social media and learn about these great students in the Entertainment, Broadcasting, Music, Film, Performance and Music Business industries and how they have impacted society. We feel certain that you’ll feel as proud as we do.

10th Anniversary Film Festival & Awards Ceremony

The Luminaries Film Festival celebrates the culmination of the Film/Video Division’s academic year. This year, �鶹ӰԺ celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the festival. Faculty and students host this event annually, in conjunction with the Mass Communication, Theatre Arts and the Audio Recording Technology Divisions to showcase, celebrate and honor the hard work and accomplishments of Film/Video students. For 2020, the event was done virtually in November and December with entertaining and engaging hosts, FTC students-Jonathan Arevalo and Joe Maddalone. Together, the F/V Division launched a spectacular event!

The Luminaries was named to memorialize one of the F/V Division’s founding members, Professor Sol Negrin, ASC. This highly accomplished and regarded educator and Cinematographer helped many students climb the ladder to success in the film and television industry. His legacy is remembered each year by those he mentored and by an institution that will always be grateful for his contributions. The Luminaries has remained through various iterations of the Film/Video program and continues to be a defining staple of the college to this day.

Led by F/V Division Chair Erika Houle, The Luminaries Committee has expressed special thanks to the participants, presenters, Equipment Room Manager Steve Cruz, Special Guest and Alumni Tommy Nickel, Chair of Audio Recording Technology John Machado, Professor Justin Andrews, Professor Robert Digiacomo, Professor Daniel Galiardi, Professor Nikki Chawla, Professor Ron Land, Professor David Grotell and Professor Michael Prywes and others, too.

Promote the Vote Control Room

In the virtual world and on ground, �鶹ӰԺ, Long Island’s College for Creative Students, had lots of activities and events this semester. Here are some highlights below.

The John Lennon Center for Music & Technology presented an 80th Birthday Tribute to the famous Beatle, John Lennon.  The performance was an acoustic version of “Imagine” by John Lennon, performed by FTC students Karli Thompson on Vocals/Guitar and Maria Rose Gutierrez on Vocals. Both students are currently enrolled in the Music Performance degree program and were encouraged by Professor Steve Briody for this event.

From the �鶹ӰԺ Performing Arts Center, collaboration among the Theatre Arts, Film/Video and Mass Communication Divisions presents the latest production of Henrik Ibsen’s 1890 play, Hedda Gabler. Funny, absorbing, and challenging, this famous play will shock and stimulate ideas and discussion. It’s about a woman trapped in her social environment in the 1950s, looking for ways to discover her identity in a patriarchic world.

This was a great opportunity for these three academic divisions to work together as they focused on combining acting, production, filming, editing and streaming the entire event online. The full performance is expected to be shared with the FTC community and visitors sometime at the top of the New Year. Check back for details.

Find out more about the election, how FTC students are handling challenges during these Covid-19 times, and other important news. Plus, see how our students relate and communicate with the public. Focused on multi-media, Mass Communication majors receive a well-rounded education with opportunities to research, interview, write, report, broadcast and publish on many topics. There’s always lots of action in the Control Room, WFTU Radio Station and the TV Studios. In the Spring 2021, check back for Sound Athletics updates, too.

In addition, Career Services, Campus Events and Residence Life have created many socially distanced and virtual events that have kept our campus life thriving. From guest speakers, escape rooms, dance lessons to choir rehearsals, there is sure to be something for everyone! Hispanic Heritage Month spurred the Bailemos Dance event and more . . . follow us on social media to see all of the fun that was had!

The �鶹ӰԺ Administration, Faculty and Staff are so proud of our students! Everyday they demonstrate how amazingly they are handling the current challenges. �鶹ӰԺ remembers John Lennon this past weekend, as the famous Beatle would have turned 80 on October 9^th.  Taken from us prematurely when he was shot in December 1980, John Lennon left a musical legacy that will always keep his peaceful and creative spirit alive and, he will never be forgotten.

In 2005, Yoko Ono visited �鶹ӰԺ to dedicate the institution’s Audio Recording Studios and Technology wing in her late husband’s honor. The John Lennon Center for Music & Technology has seen incredible growth 15 years later.  Though the pandemic has caused some temporary changes on campus, the Audio Recording Technology Department is proud of its three main Studios–A, B, and C—complete with industry standard equipment, technology and software. The Audio Recording complex was designed by internationally acclaimed recording studio architect John Storyk and contains eleven (11) studio/control room spaces. Each studio is unique and geared for specific learning and recording purposes.

Year after year, new and relevant technology has been added to the Audio Recording complex. The College is proud to offer an Audio Recording Technology concentration in three distinct academic programs—Business (B.B.A.), Mass Communication (B.S.) and Music Performance (Mus.B.).

The John Lennon Center for Music & Technology is located in the hub of the Main building at the intersection of the Film/Television Center, the Interactive Computer Graphics Lab, the College’s radio station, WFTU, the Digital Music Lab and, of course, the Audio Lab-all showcases of brilliant equipment and a venue for creative students to explore music, sound and communication. Memories of John Lennon’s illustrious life and musical career are showcased and bring the Center together.

An amazing man, songwriter and musician lives on at �鶹ӰԺ!

Create A Way to Success @ FTC!

Welcome to the Fall 2020 Semester @ �鶹ӰԺ! Classes start September 2^nd and faculty and staff have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that our students have a productive and enjoyable start to college life.

Here at FTC, we are focusing on the student experience and hoping that our many initiatives will aid students to thrive in the ‘new normal’ and to do their best.

Here are some reminders to help everyone get started:

1. Download the FTC APP! Here are the links:
   • App Store (iOS):
   • Google Play (Android):
2. Read the College’s Plan For Reopening. It is available here: /wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Five-Towns-College-Plan-for-Reopening.v-44.2020.0724.Final_.pdf. This important institutional document supercedes all of the institutional Handbooks and is incorporated in each one. All are expected to be knowledgeable about its contents. Please plan on complying so that we all stay safe, healthy and respectful of one another.
3. Be prepared so that when you arrive on campus:
   • You have been tested and submitted your Covid-19 Negative Test Results; for information about how to get tested, go here: /health-testing-information-and-records-housemd-and-other-provider-reports/;
   • You have opened the FTC APP and, then, submit the Covid-19 Daily Survey (a short three-question survey) and have a green screen to gain entry each day;
   • You are wearing a proper CDC recommended face mask (one branded FTC face mask will be provided when on campus);
   • You will have your temperature taken;
   • You know to maintain and keep 6 feet apart from others, and adhere to proper social distancing; and
   • You follow hand-washing protocols, use hand sanitizers, and follow the CDC instructions on signs placed all around campus.

FOR NEW STUDENTS:

• Please Complete the 2020 New Student Orientation . . . Virtually! And submit the form.
• For now, it is just Part 1: Required Readings, but please complete the
  1. Title IX/Enough is Enough;
  2. The EDU 100; and
  3. Submit your picture for your ID Card.

By doing all of this, your first days on campus will be much easier.

Then, your name will be on the list to receive a complimentary 2020 FTC Create A Way T-shirt!

At �鶹ӰԺ, we want everyone to be comfortable and safe. While the pandemic has disrupted traditional back to school events, we are striving to accomplish many other new initiatives. Academic courses are being offered in a myriad of formats. Campus Events will, for the most part, be virtual; but, new tents have been added around campus and there will be ample outdoor seating to host classes, take a break, or social distance with friends. Online ordering from the Upbeat is expected to be available, too!

We know there will be challenges but with all precautions in effect, reminders everywhere, and everyone’s resolving to follow protocols, the semester should resume in full swing . . . So, as long as you bring your upbeat dispositions and passion for the things you love to study, the semester should be a successful one!

After all, new classes, new professors, new friendships, and a new environment combine to form the perfect ingredients for a wonderful semester! Let’s work together to do this!

Hats off and many congratulations to all the graduates of the Class of 2020!

The �鶹ӰԺ community extends heartfelt congratulations to our graduating seniors! It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know you and witness all of your accomplishments over the past four years. We wish you the very, very best and will always be here to support you as alumni. We will see you at the rescheduled Commencement . . . date still to be determined.

As we all know, the Spring 2020 semester has been challenging in epic proportions. The advent of a national emergency declaration and the coronavirus caused the campus to close its doors and send all students, faculty and staff home to work online without much warning. Nonetheless, this caused our FTC population to be spiraled into the world of online learning—scrambling to acclimate to working and learning in an environment soon to be mastered. Perhaps many viewed this event as creating a semester of lost opportunities and events. However, from another and more positive perspective, we would like to consider viewing the Spring Semester of 2020 in a different light.

For instance, students saw and interacted with classmates and professors online in a way that could never have been imagined. Personal connections were made, masterpieces were created, and music was composed. Common Hour Online presented a series of diverse interviews and insight into the intricacies of creative minds in different academic programs. Also, students learned tips and tricks from various instructors across disciplines and observed fellow students perform-exposing their vulnerabilities and sharing their expressive creations. Guests and alumni shared their stories about being college students and professional accomplishments as well.

The virtual campus can boast other successes, too, including: (1) Senior Theatre Showcase; (2) Sound Athletics admission of several new student athletes excited to represent the College on either the soccer, basketball or volleyball teams; (3) Film/Video students leading film screenings and critiquing fellow student projects; (4) Music Division and other students’ vocal and instrumental performances by the Gospel Choir, Jazz Orchestra and Ensembles; and (4) Mass Communication students continuing to research, write and report on current events and post on social media.

Undoubtedly, this semester has had logistical obstacles. However, �鶹ӰԺ students, faculty and staff demonstrated incredible agility and the competency to master these difficulties. We are all very grateful to the entire community for rising to the challenge successfully!!

In a time when everything has come to a standstill, our College community has pushed forward . . . growing personally, professionally and proudly. As this semester comes to a close, FTC students didn’t just finish but became stronger, smarter and overcame a challenge of a lifetime. The �鶹ӰԺ Board of Trustees, President David Cohen and the entire administration sends their appreciation and good luck wishes to all for a safe and healthy summer and future!

We will miss you!!! Stay well and safe . . . and, we look forward to seeing you soon!!

Welcome back to the Spring 2020 semester!

As we all are experiencing the most unanticipated, historical pandemic of the 21^st century, let’s rest assured that there will be peace, calm and an end to all of this at some point soon. To help guide us, staying focused on one’s educational path might provide some resolve. And, so, at �鶹ӰԺ, we are looking ahead to ensure that our students continue on their academic journeys with the least disruption possible.
